I think doctor strange got ruined by the fact that they used NWH to hype it and it was nowhere near as good so it was a massive disappointment. They even took advantage of this in the trailers and promos so when I saw the movie it kinda felt like I'd been lied to.
Idek why it was called Multiverse of Madness bc there are only 3 multiverses in the story and it's mainly about Wanda trying to get to another multiverse, and America Chavez who can go to any. It's almost like the title was a trick to try and milk NWH's success. It's like the MCU knew NWH was the only thing from Phase 4 that could be compared to Phase 3 films.
The problems I had with it aren't even the usual problems tho. I feel as a comic fan that they didn't do enough of a job explaining that the Darkhold possesses ppl, so a bunch of the audience left thinking Wanda's just an evil irredeemable villain now. I also felt like Wanda's turn in this direction was extremely sudden; like say what you will about Wandavision but she repented and undid everything in the end. We just are left not seeing her on screen for over a full year and all of a sudden she's a heartless witch sending monsters and demons after little girls and cutting people in half, blowing peoples brains out, etc. Like they could've showed us this journey so we can understand her turn in this direction instead of just skipping time and turning one of the most intriguing heroes into a demoness. I can't say I didn't expect Wanda to be the main villain (bc whos gonna be the villain of a movie with a Wanda/Dr Strange teamup?), but whyd they do that like this? And the horror aspect felt on and off and just so out of place at times. America Chavez was downright cringe most of the time (since she's 16 i'll give her grace), but she's basically the main character in a movie called Doctor Strange and she doesn't hold a candle to Benedict Cumberbatch, Elizabeth Olsen, or Benedict Wong in this movie. (This would be less noticeable if they didn't force this to be her movie instead of his; plus his name is in the title). Thats the other thing, Elizabeth Olsen is a heck of an actress and kills any role she's given, and so even though I liked nothing they did with her character in this movie, I enjoyed seeing her. (I also thought it's dangerous to make her a villain bc have you seen the amount of Wanda simp accounts there are on YouTube? She's such a popular character that some theaters applauded the moment she showed up on screen.)
