We know that toad is a mushroom because in super Mario strikers when toad wins he trips over on the podium and accidentally releases spores from his head which grow into tiny mushrooms

I watched a video exposing matpat and explaining toads and it seems that toads are human-like creatures (they have skeletons that are revealed when they are electrocuted in super mario strikers) that have a symbiotic relationship with mushrooms. The mushroom gets locomotion to spread its spores and the toad gets camouflage and head protection
