You pay into a retirement plan for 50 yrs with understood terms. Then your punk kids claim it is an "entitlement" and you have no right to expect a return. F that!

After the depression, everybody was broke. They couldn't retire with 0 savings. They were going to vote every politician out of office. In a last effort , the politicians came up with the "new deal" (imagine that). It was basically some crappy trade deals but it also had......social security. The promise of retirement today paid for by the youth of tomorrow. They knew it was unsustainable

It was not unsustainable until the government began using the funds saved entirely for the elderly to be used for disabled workers, children, all kinds of people who never paid into the system among other uses never intended originally and NEVER FUNDED.

Ss is 6%. X a 40 year carrer. That's enough for 2.4 years of retirement. Even with investing, ....it's not enough. When people think of American debt they always think of China or or offshore banks, but 70% of American debt is owed to ......Americans, for retirement.

First, double the amount - Employers match. Second it was never intended as a complete retirement but a supplement to keep people alive, not thriving. Politicians created the over expectation. It needs to be changed going forward....but everyone wants to stay in power.

I'm not a fan of China or ccp , but I do like their elderly care. The family are responsible them.

In the poorer parts of the US they still do. In Appalachian areas elderly and disabled family members are taken care of by the family.
