Well sins are law. Of the 600 something laws of the Old Testament, there are some that apply today. Sinning is the breaking is Gods law.

Technically yes, the law is more rule based, but sin is stuff that is displeasing to God. We can know whether something is a sin or not by checking to see if an action is mentioned in the old testament and in the new testament.
