I thought the Labor Party were against the death penalty.

Queensland was the first to abolish the death penalty and that was under Ted Theodore (ALP) which happened in 1922.

Then Tasmania was the next to abolish the death penalty in 1968, that was under Eric Reece (ALP).

In 1973, both of Australia's territories (ACT and NT) abolished the death penalty by Gough Whitlam (ALP).

1975 saw Victoria abolish the death penalty under Rupert Hamer (Liberal) which he was a moderate.

1976 saw South Australia abolish the death penalty under Don Dunstan (ALP)

1984 saw Western Australia abolish the death penalty under Brian Burke (ALP)

1985 saw New South Wales abolish the death penalty under Neville Wran (ALP)

5 out of 6 states abolished the death penalty under a Labor state government and 1 out of 6 states under a Moderate Liberal state government.
