The modern Hivewing species we know from the 3RD arc is technically a cross breed between Nightwings and “Beetlewings” a possible sub-species of Silkwings. All Hivewings can be distinguished by their black scales, most commonly found under their wings.

After the events of Darkstalker in the legends sub-series, Clearsight had flown across the ocean separating Pantala and Pyria, where she found love again with 2 un-named Beetlewings. (NOT AT THE SAME TIME, GET YOUR MIND OUT OF THE GUTTER!!!)

After having a, quote “alarming” quantity of dragonets, the cross between their species was dubbed “Hivewings.”
