“Stephen?” Alani snapped at Stephanie, pulling her back into reality.
“I-it’s Stephanie.” She placed her hand on the table.
“Sorry,” Alani quickly corrected herself, “Stephanie.”
“Anyway, Stephanie, you can share the same mentor as Sage.”
“Who’s-“ Stephanie hesitated, “who’s Sage?”
“Purple hair, kind of short, she’ll tell you around.”
Stephanie became nervous, her face now red as she walked to the shelf.
“Hey, newbie!” Sage smiled as she unloaded the last can of pesticide out of the box.
“Hi, I’m Stephanie!” She blurted out awkwardly. “Well, Stephanie, you’re in for a wild ride!” She chuckled. What does she mean? Stephanie felt a slight twinge of unease.
“So, uh,” she rested an elbow on the shelf. “Hi, I’m Stephanie.”
“Well, I know that already but thanks for the potential news!” Sage seemed so positive; Stephanie couldn’t resist adoring her. She smiled sheepishly, her elbow knocking over a can.
“Hey, watch it!” Sage gasped as she quickly caught the can.
“Sorry. Er- Nice reflexes though.” She put her hands in her pockets.
“Thanks.” She smiled awkwardly.
“So, where’s the mentor thing?” Stephanie changed the subject quickly.
“He’ll be here soon,” Sage answered, it seemed like she had something more to say. “Anyway, come on, I’ll show you around.” She smiled.
“This is Jackie, a co-worker!”
“Yea stupid, what else would I be? A client?”
“Ignore them.” Sage rolled her eyes.
“And this is Robyn, and her- his, his apprentice.” She looked at an elderly man who was beside Oliver. “You may know his apprentice.”
Stephanie laughed. “How could you ever find that out?”
“Just a hunch.” Sage smiled. “A very obvious hunch.” The two laugh. Maybe this job won’t be as bad as I thought. She thought as she looked at Sage.
“And that’s it! You’ve seen everything! It’s not much.” She slightly giggled. “Yet.” Sage added under her breath.
It was just then that Stephanie noticed that she hadn't seen everything. One door went unnoticed. Must be the boss’ office. She assumed.
As Sage and Stephanie went back to talking, a green ooze became visible at the bottom of the unmentioned, mysterious door.
