I mean, at that point in the war we were running out of options. Japan was refusing to stop, and they probably would have won if we hadn't used the bombs. It's sad, but necessary. Also, other countries were developing the nuclear bomb, so we had to do it first in order to stay safe.

i mean yeh they still could win the war their would just be massive losses on both sides i dont think they needed the nukes to stay safe though because even in the 1960s the world was on the verge of nuclear war

I mean, what would be better? Two cities dying which brings the war to an end, or continuing the war, possibly losing thousands mote people. Both scenarios are devastating to be sure, but more lives were saved because of that bomb

If you ever want to hear a crazy revenge story, look up Macarthur's loss of the Philippines and how it fueled his command. Retaking the islands and defeating Japan were almost spiritual goals for him.
