The D. I. C.
Chapter one
I can’t believe Mom’s making me take this job. Oliver complained in his head. He looked at his older sister, she shared the same expression.
“Come on, come on!” Haleigh shouted. “Y’all don’t want to be late for y’all’s first day of work!” She rushed to the car.
They pull into the driveway and Oliver thought he could smell the mold from inside the car.
“Your new job! Awe, my two boys are growing up so fast!” Haleigh gave Oliver and his sister a hug.
Oliver almost instantly knew his sister was frustrated. But that’s beside the point.
He heard Haleigh’s car drive off, and Oliver was sure he’d see an old man named Bob or something, who can barely lift a mop. He rolled his eyes as he walked towards the door.
“The two new employees, I presume?” He heard a young voice greet them.
“So where’s the guy running this place? Who’s handling the newbies?” Oliver hastily asked, ready to get this darned job done.
“I’m Alani.” She rolled her eyes. “I’m the ‘guy’ handling the newbies.”
She walked to the door labeled “Employees only” and gestured for the siblings to follow. Inside, he saw what he expected to see, canisters of pesticide, no brand Oliver knew.
Alani showed them around the building, except for one room, but he didn’t mind, for Oliver was ready to finish the day.
“And your tutor, teacher, mentor whatever you want to call it will be..” She scanned the room. “Him!” She finally spat out as she pointed to an old, wrinkled man in the corner.
Oliver glared at Alani. Really? He thought furiously. He could grow mold by the time I walk over there!
He stormed across the room and raised his hand for the old man to shake.
“Hello, little..” the old man lowered his voice, “seemingly angry..” his voice went back to normal, surprisingly clear, “one.”
Oliver noticed the shadowed circles on his skin faded a bit.
