These type stairs were most likely made as gag stairs (like a gag gift but just a joke) in early Salem Witch Trial times these type stairs would be used to determine a witch or an innocent woman(or man, warlocks were burned at the stake too) only innocent women could walk these stairs and witches failed to do so on the same task.
