R stands for Russian.
7.62 x 39 r means 7.62 x 39 Russian.

Actually R does mean rimmed e.g. 8x52mmR Mannlicher, 8x50mmR Danish Krag.

Both share the glorious design of Mikhail Kalashnikov, but as far as light machine guns go, the PKM is just better.

The PKM offers about twice the power, so it's got that going on.

Pkm boast better accuracy and power but rpk is lighter and more reliable
