I'm talkin' 'bout science. Global, federal, liberal, sociocratic technocracy.

Nuclear arsenals and environmental collapse make it necessary for human survival, but any world government will need a constitution separating powers in a better way than the U.S. Constitution does.

We are so close to almost making it. At the same time so close to annihilating ourselves!

You’re not going to be goaded by my opinions about the conservatives mind?

Part of the fun of memes is rejecting logic and sensibilities in order to emphasize the humor. Cerebrophage kindly pointed that out to me before I bailed. It's totally true, I do it all the time, but never had I thought about it before then. So no, I'm not gonna invade this stream, which is liberal/far-left, and impose my conservative Catholic views on anyone or try to shut you all down. It'd be as pointless as any of you folks going to the politics stream and trying to call them out.

I do think this place offers a unique environment in which I can offer my perspective on opinions held by people with radically different mindsets and life experiences than my own, which is one of the cooler opportunities the internet affords, but no I'm not going to challenge anything unless it's truly egregious. Two adults angrily typing on their keyboards at each other is kind of pathetic, haha.

Besides...sometimes you guys are genuinely hilarious. There's a reason I tend to come here instead of Politics.

I think government should be held to truth.

I agree wholeheartedly. I assumed OP was referring to a system regulating society as a whole (which may not indeed be the case).

How could a government be forced to be truthful? I'm open to ideas.

That's the whole trick, isn't it? I'm not sure myself.

I think we need an additional check on governments besides the voters. Journalists generally fulfill this role, but rich plutocrats have decided to separate media into profitable bubbles, so I think we need an academic/scientific institution with the power to call out liars.

The issue is that would just become the new de facto government, or it wouldn't have the teeth to actually change anything.
0 ups, 2y,

It would be a new branch of government, but it would be based on transparency, accountability, and falsifiability.

An interesting idea, but I feel that it would just be decried as the Ministry of Truth from 1984. The justice system should already accomplish much of that anyhow, but we've managed to politicize it. IMO, getting people to stop looking at courts as partisan institutions to bypass the need to pass amendments or laws is step one on the path to fixing America.

Some courts are partisan. Pretending they aren't won't solve anything.

I have no problem with a Ministry of Truth so long as it's as transparent and accountable as proper science and journalism is.

Courts are very political now, but they don't have to be to the degree that they are. They didn't use to be and we could regain that sense of detachment.

Who'd keep the Ministry of Truth accountable? :/ The problem with this is accountability in democracy ultimately comes down to the voters, so you're always going to see the demagogues or demagogical (is that a word?) institutions command huge sway from people who just...don't want to think philosophically or scientifically about what they believe.

The scientific method keeps itself accountable, or rather, scientists keep each other accountable. The same is true of journalists. Failures in both fields are due to the influence of moneyed interests, or of groupthink.

As for the courts, how do you suggest they be de-politicized? Voting years after they've politicized the laws?
[deleted]

Indeed, which is why a Ministry of Truth would at best be accountable to the voters (like the existing government already is) and at worst accountable to nobody but its own leaders, which is not exactly how good American government should work. I'm not bagging on the idea because I think we really do need a better solution to the pervasiveness of information that is objectively false, but I for sure want to make sure we're not subtly construction a society in which people are told what to think rather than being trusted to have thoughts of their own.

I think we de-politicize them by taking back the power we've given them over the years. Quit relying on expansive Supreme Court decisions to predicate expanded government action and instead start narrowly defining the Constitution and amending it as needed. Stop the nonsense of allowing a narrow majority to confirm a judicial appointment and instead require a very large majority to ensure that truly bipartisan nominees are confirmed. Ensure that judges who are elected do not get to run with any political affiliations.

Action needs to be taken at all levels of government, but it's the only way to prevent an eventual decline of America to a monarchy of judges on circuits and the SC.

If you take an oath, then you get caught lying, aren’t you perjurious? It seems like they have a system in place but people forgot and they don’t enforce it. Or something, I can’t make sense of it.
