One word: practice.
First I had been unable to do it. A few attempts and memorization and I was eventually able to beat it. Then I kept practicing. Eventually I did it without using healing items. Quick tip- don't strike down Moldsmals. They aren't worth enough EXP. Besides, it means a bit of extra damage and hp in the end.
