he got pissed over me pointing out that something he said was super ironic and he spam flagged and downvoted every comment mentioning him, and then he flagged his own comments and unrelated comments and was making threats about how he was gonna keep going unless we did whatever he said

What happened

I see what you're saying, it was stupid of him.

But i'm gonna try and talk him down through memechat.

This still doesn't mean you have to be a douchebag to him.
You can be nice and let him be mean. That way you won't make yourself a bad guy as well.

and he downvoted so much that everyone ended up with a comment reputation timer

There's no excuse for this kind of behavior.

However, he has admitted multiple times that he wishes he wouldn't lose his temper like this. It does disappoint me that I have to side against him, because he's practically my best friend on msmg and on imgflip in general.

Even if HE wants to go crazy on you, flag and downvote everything you do, then can't you just be the bigger person and say "whatever"?
Calling him a bozo sure won't solve the problem, it will only make it worse.

I can't take up for his behavior because he is my friend, but I also can't excuse the fact that you're making the drama bigger than it should be.
