Mom, why are the Hawks leaving St. Louis? Because the owner sold the team. Why? Because their 3 home playoff games with the Warriors each drew under 9,000 fans despite their top record in the West. Why? Because attendance was already declining. Why? Because of all the Black players joining the team in recent years. Sweetheart, I hate to admit this but we have a somewhat racist fanbase here. Yes, we love all our Cardinals (both baseball and football) regardless of race. But in this sport, even now in 1968 much of our fanbase simply cannot tolerate four black players in the starting five. That’s why the owner sold the team - because the NBA has no future here. (Plus we have a hockey team now.)
