Retreating fro Kherson was genius strategic planning. Not very good for the optics.
With winter approaching the task of not only occupying a city but keeping it sustained through harsh winter conditions is a nightmare logistically.
Russia left that logistical nightmare to the Kiev regime.
Russia also station valuable men and equipment in defence of the city (which was successful against the AFU counteroffensive)
Removing those troops and equipment and sending them as reinforcements to the donbass front was the best move to make.

Current Russian conscripts from the partial mobilisation are already veterans and trained personnel that are qualified for frontline duties and are being sent to fill the gaps in security and defend territory not partake in new offensives.
