It redirects to an existing profile, despite the profile having a different name, and no previous usernames in the last 30 days.
If this were to apply to me, then my first username "erm..." and a ton of variations of my current username would still redirect to my profile.

Only the most recently replaced username redirects to an existing profile.

For a little while I used imgflip.com/user/.jpeg which was for testing a bug.
