Yes, unfortunately. a lot of special education staff where "allowed" to hit their students due to how professionals in their field understood autism at the time to be "Asperger Psychopathy", which is a now defunct/debunked term due to it's lack of information. I can attest to this as well as friends, because I have had teachers tie me to a chair with a belt to taze me and even choke me out to restrain me in K-12. this all ended (supposedly) after 2013 when the DSM-V removed the term but I graduated in 2012 so I am not sure if things are any different from back then, also a metric ton of the information pertaining to the Nazi origin of the diagnosis has been removed on the web because of the history behind it and how how wrong it was to be used. most information you may access through a VPN and translation tool if you don't speak German, it's an incredibly depressing history involving a lot of dead children leading up to 2013. because of the American education systems lack of understanding and proper training as well as doctors being provided it and training people with it.
