Reformations happened before, St. Teresa of Avila was a big reformer, she changed the structure of the convents that were running more like vacation homes with the wealthy sending their daughters there to live a life of luxury. She put a stop to that not by starting her own church and bad mouthing the church and Pope (as Luther did) she worked within the church to fix the problems. That's where the difference is. Luther is pretty clear in His writings his hatred for all things Catholic. He wasn't sticking around to make positive changes.
