I’m an outside observer (not American and not into party politics in my own country) but it’s historically unlikely. The US mid-terms have, in regent history, resulted in losses for the incumbent administration’s party. It seems to be a bit of a traditional protest. This can result on a moderation of party political directions, which is a strength of the US system. Most Presidents win a second term but receive a bit of a slap from the electorate in mid terms. Swinging from one party to another through one term Presidents detracts from political stability. The US just seems to tend towards stability and 2 parties without big differences in policy. The mid term slap is, in my opinion, related to the voluntary voting system. If your guy wins the top job, you’re less likely to vote in mid terms.

That is what everyone is saying. Nobody really knows though do they? That’s the thing about politics, you never know. I
Personally don’t believe all of the hype about this red wave.

It might be harder to tell from within. It seems like the country is very much divided though. Commentary about “red states” vs “blue states”, rural vs metropolitan. If you live and work in an area which has been solidly favouring one side all your life, you probably don’t see the whole picture. So you don’t get a real feel for the elections rate as a whole. I’d say that’s what drove people to travel from rural areas in the South and Midwest to Washington to protest. They genuinely thought that their echo chamber represented American sentiment, just as more liberal urban residents think that the talk of Californian cafes represents American sentiment.
But the political machines do. We in Australia have been heavily influenced by the very targeted polling tactics of the USA. Over here each side know which seats are “bell weather” and marginal. Bell weather seats are those that have almost always elected members from t(e party that forms government. I think there are about 6 of these that ultimately determines which party forms government. We also inherited “push polling”, in which robo calls call you to “ask you” about your opinions on certain issues. They’re always the issues on which a party is already fighting the election on. They just want you to think about that issue when you do vote, and the questions are phrased to direct you towards the policy of that party.

The country is very much decided indeed. The scary truth is, we are being divided. We don’t really stand a chance unless it becomes illegal to lie to the general public. If there was any justice, they would have already locked up Trump.
