I think Basil is a manipulative monster who planned out the entire plot of the game, (including Mari’s death and everything that happens in headspace) before he ever met Sunny and his friends. Because he’s actually been playing 8d chess the entire time, all so he can kill himself and date ghost Mari just to mess with Hero. (it’s canon i’m the dev of the game)
