downvotes are hidden because users are leaving this site after so many downvotes and imgflip doesnt want to get bankruped, so the mods think that hiding downvotes will keep many users here

It's because of toxicity and drama on users with irrelevant memes and gifs in this website. It was out about 11 years ago until in December 2015. Some users made them quit for the lack of fun and understanding of what it is about. If they add it back up, it will go out of business forever and never come back.

I.E. people are too sensitive to see how many downvotes they get on memes
