OH AND DID I MENTION Delawarians are Blue Hen's Chickens OR Muskrats, either works, Connecticuters are Nutmeggers (real close to a certain slur if you say it fast enough), and Rhode Islanders are Swamp Yankees. Not to be confused with Yankees, who are citizens of Maine, also known as Mainiacs if you wanted an extra derogatory form.
Oh, and New Brunswickers are Herring Chokers and Yukoners are Sourdough.

“Someone lost their backpack” is technically incorrect. People try to use this type of sentence as proof that you should call people “they/them” if you don’t know the gender of the person you’re talking about.

In reality, the correct English context is “Someone lost his backpack.” Since “someone” is a singular noun, and “their” is a plural pronoun, you need to use “his”. It is understood that “his” doesn’t necessarily mean gender. It simply is the default way of saying ownership.

Actually, believe it or not, English is not regulated by a governmental or pseudo-governmental organization and thus is one of the many languages where the only authorities are descriptive and not prescriptive. Basically meaning that now, according to almost everyone, "Someone lost their backpack" is now grammatically correct and "Someone lost his backpack." is potentially incorrect.
1) it would be great if English had a standalone neuter singular third person pronoun, but English sucks.
2) It's probably better to say "Someone lost this/that/a backpack" instead of using a pronoun because, since someone lost it, ownership is implied, and we don't have to go through this shit ever again.

English isn't regulated by government? What are you talking about? No language is. There are however set standards for the English language, like every language, which is why we have to go to school in order to learn about them.

I can only assume people thought "Someone lost their backpack" is correct because they didn't pay attention in English class.

But yes, "someone lost this backpack" is indeed grammatically correct.

Some countries, like France and Iceland, have special government bodies saying what is and isn't in their language. In addition, many international boards exist for languages like Spanish. Sorry if I'm a little rusty on this kinda stuff, I haven't had a reason to research it in a year or two
