beginner method:
1. solve the cross, 2. solve the corners of the white layer, 3. orient the edges of the second layer, 4. make the yellow cross, 5. complete yellow face, 6. permutate the corners, and 7. solve the cube.

My method:
If there are available F2L pairs, 1a. solve the F2L pair and any remaining cross pieces. If there are no available F2L pairs, 1b. solve cross, 2, solve F2L and any cross pieces I may have missed. If the orientation on the U face is an OLL I know, 3a. do the OLL. If I can turn the U face into an orientation I can do an OLL for, 3b. orient the pieces into the OLL, then do the OLL. If the U face is not an OLL I know and cannot easily be made into an OLL, 3c. solve the cross, then 3d, solve the U face. If the permutation is an edge cycle, 4a. do an H, Z, Ua, or Ub perm to solve the cube. If the permutation is any other PLL I know, 4b. do the PLL. If there is an adjacent corner swap, 4c. Do a T or J perm to permutate the edges and do step 4a. If there is a diagonal corner swap, 4d. do a Y perm and do step 4a.
