We think politics is sunk to an all time low in America. Oh no it hasn't. They were horrible in the early days of the country. One of the political slurs against Benjamin Franklin for whatever reason got picked up and was believed by some historian and because nobody fact checked that guy it is now in most history book. The campaign slur was the Franklin cheated on his wife and had a child with another woman. As it turns out, it never happened. There is nothing anywhere in any other historical account that even hints that Franklin cheated on his wife or sired a child with another woman.
Even worse they use to have duels and in 1840 a congressman from South Carolina nearly beat to death a congressman from Massachusetts in the halls of congress.
