The bible says "don't shed innocent blood."

Murdering someone for revenge or just because you can would be considered killing innocent blood. Killing someone while protecting yourself from being murdered is not considered innocent blood. Like you said, killing becomes murder when it is not properly justified.
However, a lot of people think kill and murder are the same thing, and they are definitely not.
