MSMG is concerned with defining what freedom of expression means and countering any threats against it. It's our mission to advocate for the expansion of civil liberties and human rights for all people regardless of age, gender, national origin, language, race, physical and mental ability, religion, sexual orientation, disability, or socioeconomic status. We strive to be an independent and free press. A healthy public interest cannot exist without an informed public. In February, 2009, Philadelphia's newspaper closed, merging with Pittsburgh's, and then re-merging with Pittsburgh's to form the Current. In June 2009, Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell proposed a special $3.7 billion tax increase for Pennsylvania to end the fiscal emergency in Harrisburg and to pay for the state's budget shortfall. In late July, the Legislature passed a spending plan which eliminated a 1.5% income tax increase, but gave up revenue sharing with the municipalities, cutting money to Philadelphia by $20 million
