No, it does not damage the pipes. Hot grease cools and solidifies in the pipes, which can cause blockage in the pipe that will slow down flow and perhaps even eventually completely block the pipe. The pipe can be reopened with a boring tool. Added expense, yes, but it does not physically damage the pipes.
