I’ve been talk in’ a whole lot about Gettysburg, but I think I’m gonna tell y’all a story from Bull Run. Me and my sis had just enlisted in the 1st 8th Volunteer Infantry, but we knew everyone in the grade by now. The Bull Run reenactment was on the green field by the school, with some stone walls. The Union took positions by the North side of it. We was firin’ the first shots of the battle. Our commanding officer was named Russell, the Rebs had Captain Tyler. My sis (still not revealing her name, she’s mine) leaned to me while the South fired and said, “Bet you die first.” I chuckled. She sadly would be wrong.
The Rebs had taken out half of the 2nd 7th Grade, and now they must’ve thought it was safe to charge. The water balloons stopped flyin’ as they charged our position. I got one Reb, she was one of the stronger ones on their side. We were still outnumbered, and the South hopped the walls. We were defeated.
