Flames don’t have shadows because they’re a light source. if something is in between the light source and the surface it’s shining onto, it blocks the light and creates a shadow. But a light source can’t create a shadow because either it creates enough light to compensate for the would-be shadow casted by a separate light source, or because it is the only light source
