They entered the house and from the bottom of the stairs, they talked to McIlveen, who asked to speak to the officers' boss, the video shows.
“Can you tell the boss to come out? I feel like he's the boss, but he's hiding from everything," McIlveen is heard saying in the video.

“Jacob, I'm right here. Either come down, or we're coming up," Carnicle responded to McIlveen. When McIlveen didn't respond, the officers begin to go up the stairs, the video shows. McIlveen fired, striking Carnicle, Hubert and Dowhan.

'I love you so much, Jake'
For two hours before the shooting, police officers asked McIlveen to answer his phone and communicated with him through loudspeakers. An officer read a message from his mother on the speaker, according to video and police.
Hi Jake, it's your mom. Not sure what's happening with you there. I wanna make sure that you're safe, and everyone with you is safe. Whatever's going (on) here, we can work through this," a police officer reads the message into the speaker, the video shows. "There's nothing that's happened that we can't work through, as a team and as a family. I just want you to know that I love you with all my heart. And I want to make sure that whatever's happening, I want everybody to get out of there safe, including you. I love you so much, Jake."
Police then fired "non-lethal gas" into the house, police said.
Shortly before midnight, McIlveen crawled outside through a window into the backyard. A witness's video footage, which also was released by police on Thursday, showed McIlveen was behind a gate when the officers fired. McIlveen died at the scene, police said.
