His roommates wanted him to leave the house. He didn't.

They called 911 for help. Officers tried to talk him into walking out the front door. He didn't.

Finally, he asked for the officers' boss. Then he opened fire.

Phoenix police released on Thursday the video footage and 911 calls that depict the moments that led up to the killing of Cmdr. Greg Carnicle by 22-year-old Jacob McIlveen earlier this year in north Phoenix.

McIlveen also injured two other officers, Alicia Hubert and Marissa Dowhan.

McIlveen was killed by another police officer after an hours-long standoff. At least three officers fired at McIlveen, police said. They were not identified.

The fatal encounter began March 29 after McIlveen's roommate called 911 to say she and a third roommate had kicked McIlveen out of their two-story house, at 40th Drive and Pinnacle Peak Road. The woman told a dispatcher that McIlveen had told the roommates he had a gun and they were worried about their safety, according to the 911 call.
"We currently have a roommate that we need to evict because he's acting really weird and have made us extremely uncomfortable, and we wanted to do it today, but he disclosed to us that he has a gun, and I don't know if this is going to be safe," the woman said, according to the 911 call that was also released Thursday. “We don't know if he's on something or what, but he's not getting out of the house."

At least two officers came to the house, where they talked to McIlveen, who was in his room on the second floor, an officer's on-body camera footage shows. The officers told him they were there to help and that he had rights as a renter, the video shows.

Eventually, McIlveen came down the stairs and the officers spent 35 minutes talking to him, attempting to get him out of the house, police said.
At one point, the officers left the house and McIlveen stood near the front door. The video showed he shut the door from the inside while the officers were outside. Police say someone stacked up furniture against the front door.

One of the roommates was still in the house locked in his room, according to the video footage. That roommate threw keys out of a window to officers who unlocked the door, police said.

'Either come down, or we're coming up'
At this point, more officers arrived, including Carnicle, 56, who was the on-duty commander that day.

They entered the house and from the bottom of the stairs, they talked to McIlveen, who asked to speak to the officers' boss, the video shows.

“Can you tell the boss to come out? I feel like he's the boss, but he's hiding from everything," McIlveen is heard saying in the video.

Carnicle was inside the house, too, the video shows.

“Jacob, I'm right here. Either come down, or we're coming up," Carnicle responded to McIlveen. When McIlveen didn't respond, the officers begin to go up the stairs, the video shows. McIlveen fired, striking Carnicle, Hubert and Dowhan.

Two of the officers dropped their guns after being shot, police said. Another officer fired back, police said. The video shows officers going up the stairs to bring Carnicle and the two other injured officers outside the house.

Carnicle died at the hospital, police said.

Special Assignments Unit officers arrived at the scene at about 7:30 p.m. The roommate who was inside the house went out the window and jumped down, police video shows.
'I love you so much, Jake'

For two hours before the shooting, police officers asked McIlveen to answer his phone and communicated with him through loudspeakers. An officer read a message from his mother on the speaker, according to video and police.

Hi Jake, it's your mom. Not sure what's happening with you there. I wanna make sure that you're safe, and everyone with you is safe. Whatever's going (on) here, we can work through this," a police officer reads the message into the speaker, the video shows. "There's nothing that's happened that we can't work through, as a team and as a family. I just want you to know that I love you with all my heart. And I want to make sure that whatever's happening, I want everybody to get out of there safe, including you. I love you so much, Jake."

Police then fired "non-lethal gas" into the house, police said.
Shortly before midnight, McIlveen crawled outside through a window into the backyard. A witness's video footage, which also was released by police on Thursday, showed McIlveen was behind a gate when the officers fired. McIlveen died at the scene, police said.

He had one of the guns that was dropped by the officers, police said.
