Since the time of sailing ships, modes of conveyance have been referred to as "she." And you'll find more motor vehicle owners gender their vehicles, and those who gender their vehicles tend to refer to them as female when referring to them; "she," "the old girl," "come on, start you b!tch," etc.

I have come across people who gender their vehicle as "he," but they're rare, and, the car is usually clearly a complete himbo.
