Okay, I am the OP, and I will answer your questions. Progressives were unequivocally on the right side of history when it comes to slavery. Conservatives at the time (who I in no way want to equate to conservatives today) wanted to conserve the institution of slavery, and Progressives at the time wanted to progress past slavery. Progressives were also on the right side of history during the civil rights era. I am just unsure if they will be on the right side of history on the current era we're living in.

The idea that liberty loving Republicans and Conservatives ( To conserve the constitutional principle that all men are created equal) were progressive because they wanted to extend liberty and freedom to all is wrong.

They were actually only trying to be fair and compassionate with all peoples.

The term Progressive refers to the American Communist party of the early 20th century. They CO opted the term liberal because the Progressives did not want to be associated with the Soviet Communists after the revolution.

Republicans and Conservatives again fought for civil rights in order to endow the freedom and liberty to all. The Democrats fought it to the nail for years.

Since the opposite of pro is con please consider the term Congress.
