that happens to me in pokemon shield because my cousin played it and when i was new to it she gave me her strong pokemon and i tried to battle with them but they wouldnt obey they would doze off and die
when i was playing ultra sun i once got wonder traded a level 100 pokemon before my 3rd kahuna and it just woudn't obey me and then i remembered that feature existed
