Chapter 1 - June 1861
Gumball and Darwin were on their small farm with their sister, Anais, and mother, Nicole, when news broke of the Southern rebellion. There was going to be a war. There were celebrations and meetings all across town when people heard the news. The two figured war was a fun experience. Sure, there was death, and cannon fire, but that was only secondary compared to the excitement of war. Gumball and Darwin both agreed they didn’t want to miss it. “We’ll be fine, Mom.” Darwin said to Nicole as they packed their things in a bag. “Yeah, we won’t cause any trouble.” Gumball said.
Nicole let them leave, and after some chat and a hug with Anais, the two set off for the nearby recruitment office. But first, Gumball insisted they visit his friend and ever growing romantic partner, Penny. “How do you two plan to get in? You’re but 15 years old!”
“Well, fair Penny, it’s quite simple. We’ve devised a special technique called ‘lying’.” Gumball replied, half sarcastically.
“I suppose that would work. And besides, you’ll be back by the fall, right? That’s what everyone’s been saying.”
“Of course. There’s no way the rebs could hold out for that long, right?”
That’s what everyone said. The war would be over by fall. If only Nicole and Penny knew just what was coming, they would’ve fought hard to make sure they stayed back home. But all the parades and festivals calmed them, reassured them the war would be over in a month.
The war would be over in fall.
