3 Pay attention to yourselves! If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him, 4 and if he sins against you seven times in the day, and turns to you seven times, saying, 'I repent,' you must forgive him.”
I should clarify. I am taking the verse as “hate the sin but love the sinner” but admit some rather powerful caveats. 1) “brother” is usually interpreted as fellow Christian 2) “hate the sin but love the sinner” is often meant as “hate the sin and love the unrepentant sinner” and this verse CLEARLY doesn’t mean THAT. Indeed a better paraphrase would be “hate the sin and gently bring the sinner to repentance”. Your thoughts?
