Sadly before then sugeries where done while you were awake even brain surgery and eye surgery and more and you just had to suck it up while the doctor is cutting you open

Brain surgery is still done while awake

I think they use anthesisthia

During some special surgeries they only put anaesthetics on the skin and the patient is concious so they can see the brain working

I saw a video of a guy who played violin during surgery so the doctors could find out why he wasn't able to play as well as before

Fun fact: Before the 1970s, doctors wouldn't use anesthesia on babies, as it was thought back then that they couldn't feel pain
