The name 'Northern Ireland' was made in 1921, when the official Ireland was divided by the Government of Ireland in Act 1920, creating a government for the six north-eastern counties.

The majority of Northern Ireland's population were unionists (a member of a Northern Ireland political party, who is in favour of joining Britain).

So they split and now Northern Island is part of the UK and Ireland is it's own independent country.

There was a Irish civil war but it didn't end well with them

What do you expect for just a civilian army compared to an organized army

Well yeah, but that was old Britain. Back when the British empire existed. The loyalists where helped by the British, so of course they won. They had all the guns and money.
