My Mario Odyssey head cannon is that all the ghosts living in Bonneton are actually the deceased spirits of the Toppat clan from Henry Stickman, unable to rest due to all the crimes they committed in life. The reason Cappy looks different from everyone else because he was the leader of the Toppat clan, and by helping Mario defeat Bowser, he freed him and his people from being trapped in an eternal unrest.
