It was released in 2013 alongside the more expensive iPhone 5s, the 5c was supposed to be a budget phone, with the base model starting at $550, while the 5s' base model was $650, and people went for the more expensive 5s, and the 5c had an older chipset, with the 5c having an A6 (like the original iPhone 5 which the iPhone 5c replaced) and the 5s having an A7, the 5c came in 8GB, 16GB and 32GB, while the 5s came in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB, the 5c only sold 24 million units worldwide cause of it's price
