Warning: I’m about to say an essay about problems and suggestion of the stream in question,

Essay 1: PROBLEMS

TL:DR: Fun stream lacks originality, is rigged, upvote beg, and doesn’t give new users an opportunity to rise. Sorting by new is worthless.

I mean, here are the several problems of the ‘fun’ stream.

Originality: There are a couple of decent and original memes out there but the majority of memes I usually see are reaction memes, references to imgflip ( mentions of upvotes, downvotes, etc…), upvote begging, and overused meme styles, templates and text ( you have been visited by X, Big brain, etc…) Not wanna say they’re all bad but it’s nice having originality once in a while.

Rigged: Top users usually have their memes make it to the front page. Some of these users are very good at making memes [ (☞゚ヮ゚)☞ Who_Am_I ] and some who… let’s just say a little bit stale. From what I’m guessing, when a top users posts something, their followers view their memes and perhaps upvote them; Meme plugs also helps. This is possibly why their memes usually make it to the front page. The problem from this is that we are getting the same meme taste from a specific person all the time, and the effect from their successful posts buries others users memes, therefore burying a new taste?

upvote begging: It’s a common problem we all can relate to. From what I can tell, it qualifies in all the problems I’ve listed so far. Lack of originality ( X upvotes and I will X, upvote = agree, etc…) and maybe rigged. Here’s a problem that most of the stream user do that contributes the meme form reaching the front page. [[- Please correct me if I’m wrong -]] People comments useless insults that contributes nothing to taking down the meme. No, this time it isn’t wrong because it gives the upvote beggar points, It increases the comment counts on the meme ( I’ve seen one that goes up to 500 comments, full of the same insults). Some mindless, random users just upvotes the meme because they are simply naive and countless of people ‘viewing’ the meme to comment insults. This only feeds the algorithm god to send the meme into the front page. JUST PLEASE IGNORE THE MEME. it’s for the better.

New: finding a good meme by sorting by new is the exact equivalent to finding a gem in a landfill. The new section is straight up full of… idk, memes created by 5 year olds. These memes where often unfunny and that could drive people from completely give up on sorting by new. The consequences of this is that not well-known users that has a good taste in memes would get completely buried and ignored by the community. that’s kinda the reason why I don’t post in fun anymore.

Reposts: Ah yes, reposts. They should fall under the same category as Originality but reposts is a big problem I don’t think most people notice. People doesn’t notice reposts most when they are stolen from a meme a few months (maybe years) back. Many people confuse between Reposts and Reaction memes as they are quite similar.

Here are the differences between Reposts and Reaction memes.

Reposts:
Directly stolen from a meme without any image alteration (making it blurred, darker, sharper, brighter doesn’t count)
Adding useless text to the image such as lol or lkr still counts as a repost as it requires no effort

Reaction memes:
Toke a meme ( with or without templates) and put their own templates under it.
Still pretty low effort and both lacks originality.

However, applying rules in R/memes might be able to dissolve these problems. Yes, the moderation would be far more strict, but the stream will improve. Continuing from Essay 2 ( which is below )

Essay 2: Suggestions and New Rules

TL:DR: I believe applying rules from R/memes could improve the fun stream

I will now copy and paste the rules from R/memes as it’s 2am in the morning and I’m to tired to explain it myself ( yes, I’m an insomniac )

1. Rule 1 - ALL POSTS MUST BE MEMES and NO REACTION MEMES
All posts must be memes and follow a general meme setup.
Reaction Memes are Low Effort and are not valid Memes, they are removed at mods discretion
No titles as meme captions. <— you can ignore this
No unedited webcomics. <— you can consider this
No memes that are text only. <— you can consider this
Pictures without captions may be removed by a moderators discretion.
Someone saying something funny on twitter/tumblr/reddit/etc. is not a meme. <— you can consider this

2. Rule 2 - MEMES SHOULD BE GENERAL, NOT SPECIFIC PERSONAL EXPERIENCES
Please make posts general rather than specific personal experiences. This helps make posts more relatable.
No selfies, SMS screenshots, personal stories, chats, emails, etc. <— idk bout this one
Do not post "memes" of you or your friends IRL.
No creepshots

3. Rule 3 - NO SPAM/WATERMARKS, NO CHAINPOSTING/SPLIT POSTS, NO UNMARKED NSFW

Rule 11 - NO MEMES ABOUT POLITICS
Absurd memes featuring politicians are allowed, but this sub does not allow content more suited for /r/politicalhumor.
No NPC memes, or memes about how libtards or magats are so wrong. Take it somewhere else, thanks.

12. Queue flooding is not allowed in this subreddit. Limit your posts to five or less per day

Most of the rules I see here mentioned the problem with the fun stream. However, it is up to the Mods to decide whether to take the ideas or not

That's gonna be unfair for a reason. I went to Reddit somehow and some people who posts it got their images removed for various reasons because of lack of knowing what the real meme looks like and reaction memes are the best priority but still unfair and not considering a meme at some point. All rules applied the same but Rule 1 and 9 would do negative impact just like how it happened to Imgflip users who joined years ago, some users left because of hate, and downvote counter increased.

Anyway, my otha' opinions

I agree with making the rules similar. But there are some problems.

-- We also need to talk about the new users. Most have under-satisfactory meme-creating skills. If their posts in the "fun" stream are disapproved because of low quality, we might see people leaving and less user retention.

-- The list of rules in the "fun" stream would be extremely long and would be a slight annoyance.

— I still haven’t figure out what to do with the new users. Maybe we could ignore that rule for now.

— There are some rules already applied in the stream that are mentioned here. I know it might be a pain to read all through them but the subreddit hold intact from the rules. I’m sure they can simplify them right?
