Alan Turing, a mathematician and computer scientist, was tasked with decoding German transmissions to U-Boats which were decimating the allied war effort in the Atlantic theatre. He was able to crack a code that was deemed uncrackable with his invention of the computer. (Fun fact, the test for AI Sentience is called the "Turing Test" named after Alan Turing.)
However, when it was discovered that he was homosexual, he was given an ultimatum...
Turing was prosecuted in 1952 for homosexual acts. He accepted hormone treatment with DES, so-called chemical castration, as an alternative to prison. In 2009, following an Internet campaign, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown made an official public apology on behalf of the British government for "the appalling way he was treated". Queen Elizabeth II granted Turing a posthumous pardon in 2013.
The cause of death, however disputed, is believed to be suicide by cyanide poisoning that was placed into an apple.
Ergo, the apple with the bite mark.
... Or so I've been told. I haven't encountered information which suggests otherwise.
They made a movie about Alan Turing and this series of events involving World War 2 called "The Imitation Game" with Benedict Cumberbatch playing Alan Turing.
A good watch.
