Yellow is primary in paint, you can take red, blue, and yellow paint and make that into any color, but in your eyes you have cones for red, blue, and green light and you can make all colors from those three with light. When you see something that is yellow it is because the receptors for red and green are triggered at their peak at the same time. This doesn't seem to make any sense, but this is how your eyes work.
