Kolbe spent several years serving as a missionary in Japan. He received a vision from the BVM to build a monastery on the side of a mountain opposite a local town which was later annihilated by atom bomb in the Pacific arena of WW2. That town was Nagasaki. So the story goes, and I believe factored into his beatification.
