Old smallpox vaccines were performed by slicing off a piece of an infected person’s skin, then slitting the person who is being vaccinated’s arm and stuffing the skin inside. This helped the body develop immunity in the same way modern vaccines do, but was also more deadly as many ended up getting smallpox due to too much infection being put in to their system
