Well, first, have a casual conversation with him, then bring up the subject of the dance, like, "hey are you going?" and then ask. thats what I did. it worked!
You could ask him if you want to get coffee together, tell the cafe guy to write "will you go to the dance w/ me?" on the cup, then bring the coffee back to your table and say "hey I think they spelled your name wrong."
