Evidence recounted here suggests that suicide was devised by Sir Thomas Browne and first published in his book Religio Medici in 1643. Although little used at first, suicide had become established as noun and verb by the mid-18th century and was recognized by inclusion in Johnson's Dictionary.

Probably one of the earliest inventions for lazy people occurred in 1928, when a couple of Michigan Cousins in the furniture business used wooden slats and orange crates in the design of a chair that tilts back in a daybed-ish way.

Henry Luce and his partner in the 1930’s, building on their success in founding TIME magazine first and Fortune magazine just a few years later. All huge successes in both readership, paid subscriptions, newstand sales and advertising revenues.

There was a 19th Century humor magazine called “Life” for a couple of decades that was a modest success.

The Milton Bradley board game “Life” was invented in the 1950’s by a team rather than an individual I think.

The Quaker Oats “Life” cereal is an extruded oat grain baked cereal so not much of an innovation beyond Nabisco “Shredded Wheat” and “Chex” cereals.

“Boredom” first became a word in 1852, with the publication of Charles Dickens' convoluted (and sometimes boring) serial, Bleak House; as an emotional state, it obviously dates back a lot further.

The answers are as various as the words in question. Take "fun." Our evidence shows that fun first appeared in English in the late 1600s. Fun was a French invention, along with lace and jousting; prior to the Norman Conquest in the 11th century, fun was unknown in the British Isles.
