What do you think of when you hear the word "dictator"? You often think of Hitler, Mussolini, Saddam Hussein. But I bet you've never heard of the Filipino dictator, Ferdinand Marcos.

Ferdinand Marcos was the 10th President of the Philippines. On 1972, he put the Philippines under Martial Law, giving himself the unlimited authority as dictator. Under Martial Law, those who disagreed with him were tortured. They were harassed, molested, raped. Marcos and his wife stole our money and land and used it for their own benefits. The millions of shoes in Imelda Marcos' closet? Those shoes were bought with our blood, sweat, and tears. And when Benigno Aquino threatened to put an end to his presidency, he assassinated him.

When Benigno Aquino's wife, Cory Aquino, became president, Marcos and his family were exiled to Hawaii, where he died.

But in 1991, Imelda Marcos and her children were allowed to return to the Philippines. In 2016, the dictator was buried in Libingan ng mga Bayani, a cemetery meant for heroes. Ferdinand Marcos' children became politicians. Despite all they have done, all of their crimes, they are still honored and treated as heroes.
