An absolute dichotomy of yes or no for Christmas movies is imprecise. There are four categories of Christmas movie; Category A contains movies where the main characters are Christmas icons like Santa or Frosty and Christmas itself is a central theme (Tim Allen’s Santa Clause movie for instance). Category B contains movies where Christmas is the central theme but the characters are not Christmas icons (You’ll shoot your eye out kid!). Category C contains movies where the central characters are Christmas icons but it is either not set at Christmas time or where Christmas isn’t the central theme (a movie about Santa vacationing in Florida and entering a sand castle competition would count). Finally, Category D contains movies set at Christmas time but Christmas isn’t the central theme and the characters aren’t Christmas icons. Clearly Die Hard falls into Category D. It is in fact a Christmas movie, but only just barely and in the weakest of ways. Prometheus would also count as a category D Christmas movie.
