South sympathizers can say it was for states rights, but really it was about slavery. Read the secession documents of the south. Half of them give their reasons why, and they say it was to preserve slavery. Some cite the new administration's (Lincoln's) opposition to slavery. Very interesting. Definitely look at primary documents.
